 Common Questions About Amastone

Q.) Are all retaining wall blocks the same?

A.) Yes and No. From the standpoint of engineering theory, a properly designed and constructed modular block retaining wall, such as Amastone, using a geogrid reinforcement does not depend upon the type of block facing used to actually support the reinforced soil mass.  From an engineering standpoint, the geogrid reinforced soil mass is the retaining wall and the blocks function more as an architectural veneer than as a structural element.

Q.) So, if the blocks are just a veneer, why not use the least expensive materials that you can find?

A.) The durability of the block facing is key to the long-term appearance of the retaining wall. Because of this, Amastone is one of the highest quality blocks available on the market. Amastone is manufactured to the most stringent industry requirements for compressive strength and adds a compound to the concrete mix that helps to eliminate unsightly efflourescence that other block manufacturers ignore. [Efflourescense is the chalky-white build up that often occures on the face of retaining wall blocks over time. Some efflourescence is unavoidable in certain applications, but only minimal amounts should be expected.] Amastone's quality and durability are unmatched in the industry and because of its unique design, Amastoneis the most economical concrete retaining wall product available anywhere.

Q.) Why does't Amastone use pins or clips to hold the blocks together?

A.) Much as has been claimed, litigated and discussed about the need for pins or other "mechanical devices" in modular block walls. The truth is that none of the fiberglass or plastic pins or clips sold with other modular block wall systems actually offer any structural strength to the wall. These plastic or fiberglass pieces are expensive and aren't capable of actually offering any strength to the retaining wall. They sometimes serve as handy, (but expensive) alignment devices that may assist in laying out straight sections of wall; but this can be accomplished just as easily with a string line and two stakes.  Why spend an additional $1.00-$1.50 per square foot of wall for peices of plastic that offer nothing to the long-term durability of the wall? Amastone doesn't require pins or clips and yet has been used successfully  in retaining walls up to 25' tall that have been performing structurally for more than 20 years.

Q.) Is Amastone equal to the other retaining wall blocks on the market?
